Years 7–8 / Key Stage 3
- Age: 11+.
- Duration: 2 years.
- Language: English.
Years 7–8 — are the first two years of secondary school: students study core academic subjects and gradually prepare for their future choice of GCSE subjects. The timetable includes:
- English,
- Mathematics,
- Sciences,
- Geography,
- History,
- Religious Studies,
- French,
- Chinese,
- Latin,
- Art,
- Drama,
- Music,
- Computing.
In the junior years, great emphasis is placed on developing academic and communication skills: students learn to express their thoughts confidently both orally and in writing, analyse information, and work on projects. Creative subjects — art, music, and drama — help develop imagination, self-confidence, and public speaking skills.
Junior students participate in school community life through the house system of Effra, Fleet, Tyburn, and Walbrook. The school regularly holds sports tournaments, musical performances, creative projects, and joint events between children of different ages.
Year 9: pre-GCSE
- Age: 13+.
- Duration: 1 year.
- Language: English.
Year 9 at Kensington Park School is a transitional year before GCSE: the student still retains a broad range of subjects but is already looking towards specialist disciplines ahead of the upcoming exams. The timetable retains English, mathematics, computer science, humanities, languages and creative subjects. The key change concerns the sciences: biology, chemistry and physics are already taught separately, giving the student more time for laboratory work and GCSE preparation.
In Year 9, the school places emphasis on independence and academic skills: students learn to work with longer and more complex assignments, prepare projects, analyse information and manage their workload across subjects. This format helps them gradually adapt to the demands of GCSE and feel more confident in senior school. A rich creative programme and outdoor component are retained.
Students can join the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme, which combines volunteering projects, physical activity, practical skill development and residential expeditions. The pre-GCSE year at KPS helps students better understand their own strengths and future academic interests.
GCSE
- Age: 14+.
- Duration: 2 years.
- Language: English.
The main feature of GCSE at KPS is the flexible choice of subjects without being divided into rigid thematic blocks: a student can put together a combination that suits their strengths and future path to A-Level. Students typically study ten subjects.
- The compulsory part includes English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, one modern language, and three science subjects from the following: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science.
- The remaining three subjects are chosen by the student themselves: these can be a fourth science, a second foreign language, Art, Drama, Music, History, Geography or Business.
In the science subjects, the school places emphasis on practical work. Biology, Chemistry and Physics are studied as separate subjects from Year 9, so by the time students reach GCSE they have a solid foundation and can devote more time to laboratory work and exam preparation. The hands-on approach is maintained in the creative subjects as well: students work in art studios, theatre spaces and music classrooms, create their own projects and build a portfolio.
The learning process is structured so that students gradually get used to the GCSE exam format and are not left to cope with the workload alone. Each student has a tutor who monitors academic progress and helps maintain a balance between subjects, homework and exam preparation.
One-Year GCSE
- Age: 15+
- Duration: 1 year.
- Language: English
One-Year GCSE is an accelerated programme for students who need to obtain British examination qualifications within one academic year and move on to A-Level. The course is usually chosen by international students aged 15–16, as well as British pupils who need to change school or retake GCSE with a stronger result.
Students study five GCSE subjects. The compulsory core includes Business Studies, Double Science, English Language and Mathematics: this combination covers the basic entry requirements for Sixth Form and helps students adapt to the British format.
The programme is intensive: in one academic year, students cover the GCSE curriculum and prepare for the exams. Throughout the year, students regularly sit mock exams, analyse typical mistakes, and learn to work with tasks in the GCSE format.

What advice would you give to future applicants before applying to British schools and why?
Understand the school’s ethos and ensure it aligns with your goals. I would further advise students to prioritise their English language studies in preparation for the entrance testing phase.
When looking at applicants, we consider not only the academic record and entrance exam performance, but also students who not only excel academically but also demonstrate character and potential for growth.
Educational process
The school operates a House system — Effra, Fleet, Tyburn and Walbrook, named after the ancient rivers of London. Students compete in inter-house competitions in sport, music and creative disciplines, earn points and take part in whole-school events. The House that accumulates the most points by the end of the year wins a prize trip.

Scholarships Kensington Park School
The school offers scholarships upon entry to Years 7, 9 and Sixth Form — these are the 11+, 13+ and 16+ stages — and considers five categories: strong academics, music, sport, art and drama. For senior students entering Sixth Form, there is a separate programme called Kensington Scholars: it is designed for candidates with high academic results and can reduce tuition fees by up to 30%.
Standard academic scholarships can also reach up to 30%. Scholarships in music, art, drama and sport are generally smaller — typically up to 15% (the specific amount is determined by the school individually following assessment of the candidate).
Academic scholarships for Years 7–10 are awarded to the strongest candidates based on entrance test results. For Year 12, the school looks at GCSE results, school reports and chosen A-Level subjects. Candidates for a music scholarship prepare a teacher's reference, a portfolio and perform two contrasting pieces or songs. Sport candidates demonstrate results in their discipline, leadership and teamwork skills, and provide a coach's reference. For an art scholarship, a portfolio covering drawing, painting, sketching, textiles or photography and a life drawing are required; candidates for a drama scholarship provide references and video recordings of their performances.
The scholarship is valid for the entire period of study, but the school reviews it annually: the pupil must perform well academically, comply with the rules and participate in school life. Applications for 11+, 13+ and 16+ are typically accepted until November before the year of entry.
A family discount is available: if two children from the same family are enrolled at KPS simultaneously, the younger child's tuition is 5% cheaper.
