The United Kingdom is returning to the Erasmus+ program!

After six years of absence, the United Kingdom will once again become a participant in one of Europe's largest educational programs: from 2027, the country will resume its partnership with Erasmus+, opening new opportunities for students, schoolchildren, trainees, and educational organizations.

The UK's exit from the program was one of the consequences of Brexit in 2021, but now the situation is changing: the British government has confirmed the return to Erasmus+ for at least the first year of participation, starting from 2027.

For prospective students and participants in international exchanges, this is very important news. Erasmus+ is considered the main European program for academic mobility and cooperation in the fields of education, vocational preparation, youth policy, and sport. In recent years, the program has not only maintained its popularity but has also expanded significantly, with a budget for 2021–2027 reaching €26.2 billion — nearly twice as much compared to the previous funding cycle. It is expected that in the first year alone after the United Kingdom's return to Erasmus+, around 100,000 people will be able to benefit from the program. This applies not only to university students — schoolchildren, teachers, trainees, and organizations implementing international educational projects will also be able to participate. Among the top opportunities are studying in European countries, cultural exchanges, internships at companies, and joint international initiatives between educational institutions.

An important outcome will also be the reverse flow of participants: British schools, colleges, and universities will once again be able to welcome students from EU countries, which will broaden international cooperation and make the educational environment more diverse.

Many experts view the return to Erasmus+ as part of a broader trend toward restoring cooperation between the United Kingdom and the European Union (in recent years, both sides have begun to engage more actively on issues of economy, energy, security, and education). In May 2025, the first UK–EU summit since Brexit took place, with the parties reaching agreements on several areas of cooperation. Against this backdrop, participation in Erasmus+ looks not merely like an educational initiative, but as one of the symbols of a new stage in relations between the countries.
