Master's degree is the second stage of modern higher education in Russia (the first stage is a bachelor's degree). Despite the fact that in pre-revolutionary Russia the academic title of "master" existed already in the XIX century, in the USSR it was temporarily not used. In Soviet times, there was no division of higher education into bachelor's and master's degrees, there was only a five-year specialist's degree, after which it was possible to enter graduate school immediately.

The gradual transition from a single-stage higher education - a specialist degree - to a two-stage one began in the post-Soviet space in 1996 and was almost completely completed by 2010.

In the West, higher education has long been represented by bachelor's and master's degrees. The Russian standards of that time did not correspond to Western ones, and this was an obstacle to full participation in student exchange programs. That is why it was decided to bring Russian educational standards to the global ones. Thanks to this, most higher education institutions in Russia switched to two-stage education by 2010, which allowed Russian students to participate in exchange programs, learn research methods in other countries, and study world culture.

The bachelor's degree emphasizes practical skills and knowledge. The magistracy, on the other hand, provides more in-depth theoretical training in the chosen narrow profile, which allows you to apply for the positions of managers, and also prepares you for admission to graduate school in order to devote yourself to scientific activities in the future - research and teaching. Therefore, first of all, those graduates of the bachelor's degree who feel interested in this, the need to expand and deepen their theoretical knowledge in specialized disciplines should think about entering the magistracy.
